Apologies, Corrections and Clarifications Mr. M. Cassim of Wellawatta has written to us a letter regarding the contents of an interview with Posts and Telecommunications Minister D. M. Jayaratne by our staffer Anura Maitipe. It says: "In an interview with Anura Maitipe in The Sunday Observer, on Sunday, the 16th October, Posts and Telecommunications Minister, D. M. Jayaratne has made the following remarks, referring to the SLMC supporting Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe 'The SLMC led by Rauff Hakeem has no vote base in the East. If he had contested from the East he would have lost his seat. During the previous election, he was elected to Parliament from the Kandy district, with UNP votes with a slim majority." These remarks of his are incorrect, misleading, and can be called malicious misinformation. Rauff Hakeem did in fact contest from the Amparai district in the General Elections in April, 2004, securing the highest preference vote amongst all the candidates in the district. He led the SLMC's campaign and got the largest mandate in terms of votes
for the SLMC in the North Eastern province totalling over 200,000 votes. It
was in the elections in 2000 and 2001 that he contested from the Kandy
district. |
