TNA pleased with Hettigoda Manifesto

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) may even consider to support Victor Hettigoda (Symbol Cup) at the forthcoming Presidential election", TNA MP Ravi Raj told the Sunday Observer.

But the party has not yet taken a final decision. The TNA is studying the manifestos of Presidential candidates whether to extend their support to one of them or not.

When asked why he likes Victor Hettigoda's manifesto, Ravi Raj said: "My personal opinion is that his manifesto published in newspapers categorically stated to find a solution to the North and East problem. He is very bold on the issue. I appreciate him for the courage he shows in the manifesto though he risks losing popular Sinhala votes in the South".

When studying the manifestos of many candidates, it is evident that many of them are trying to clinch power giving promises rather than addressing grave problems facing the country, he noted.

However, Victor Hettigoda starts his manifesto promising to bring together all parties involved in the war and amend the Constitution to bring peace to the Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and Burgher communities.

During the 1999 Presidential Election, PA candidate Chandrika Bandaranike Kumaratunga received 52,043 votes from Jaffna, 16,202 from Vanni, 58,975 from Batticaloa, 149,593 from Digamadulla and 56,691 from Trincomalee. UNP candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe received 48,005 votes from Jaffna, 43,803 from Vanni, 104,100 from Batticaloa, 109,805 from Digamadulla and 63,351 from Trincomalee.
