All media should respect Elections Act - Dr. Rajitha Senaratne

by Ananda Kannangara

Kalutara District UNP MP Dr. Rajitha Senaratne on Thursday warned the heads of four state run print and electronic media institutions for violating the rules of the Election Act passed by the Parliament several years ago.

Dr. Senaratne accused the media institutions, especially the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and the Independent Television Network for telecasting more programs to give adequate publicity to the UPFA Presidential Candidate Mahinda Rajapakse than the other twelve candidates, especially for the Opposition Leader and the UNP candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe.

He made these observations at the National Media Employees United Guild (NMEUG) annual meeting held at the New Town Hall, Colombo.

MP's Prof. G.L. Peris, Tissa Attanayaka and Gamini Lokuge were also present. NMEUG President Nimal Preamsiri and Secretary Sunil Sendanayake organised the meeting.

Dr. Senaratne further said that under a UNP Government which is expected to be formed after Nov. 18, legal action would be instituted against all the heads of state run media institutions for violating the Parliamentary passed Election Act and extending unprecedented publicity for a single candidate.

"As we are aware the Election Act has clearly mentioned only about the conduct of state run media institutions during election periods and not about the Private media institutions," he said.

Making a special reference on the conduct of Lake House publications during election periods, Dr. Senaratne said that Lake House newspapers are in the habit of giving little publicity to the UNP Presidential candidate, while publishing more articles to tarnish the political image of Ranil Wickremesinghe from its day today articles.

However Dr. Senaratne urged the heads of four media institutions, the SLRC, the ITN, Lakhanda Radio and the Lake House to behave independently and in a fair manner during election periods by respecting the Election Act. (AK)
