NZ 'A' win rain hit Test series

by Ranjan Anandappa

New Zealand 'A' took the three match four day unofficial cricket Test series 1-0 when the third and final Test ended in a draw at the P.Sara Stadium yesterday.

In reply to the New Zealand 'A's first innings score of 365 for 6 declared, Sri Lanka 'A' were 160 for 7 wickets with only 48.2 overs possible due to bad light and rain when umpires Ranmore Martinesz and Gamini Silva called off play around 4.05 pm.

The New Zealanders won the first unofficial Test at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy in a rain hit series and the Test which ended yesterday was no exception with New Zealand'A' batting till the third day due to rain and building up a substantial score of 365 for 6 declared. The second Test too was drawn.

The home team batted on the last day and once again displayed their vulnerability to pace. They lost skipper Avishka Gunawardena (4), Ian Daniel (0) and Jehan Mubarak ( 6) with only 11 runs on the board. Greame Alridge, the Kiwi paceman struck vital blows to reduce the Lankans for 91 for 5.

But Dharmaraja College school boy Chamara Kapugedera stood firm when wickets started falling around him. Kapugedera and Malinga Bandara added 65 runs for the fifth wicket and took the score from 91 for 5 to 156 .
