Caltex to continue rugby sponsorship for another five years

Caltex Lubricants Lanka Ltd have extended their sponsorship of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) for the next five years (2006 to 2010) with their present sponsorship package being increased by a further Rs. 2.6 million. next year.

The President of the SLRFU, Priyantha Ekanayake, said that Caltex moved into the scene in 200. after the exit of Carlsberg, and that the SLRFU, are very grateful for Caltex for their continued support and increase of the sponsorship monies.

Ekanayake also said that the SLRFU are very keen on developing women's rugby too and their aim is for Sri Lanka to be within the top two in Asia.

At the moment, there are 19 women's sides in the country - nine from the Western Province RFU, three from Subaragamuwa Province RFU, two each from North Western Province RFU, Uva RFU and North Central Province, RFU, while one from Central Province RFU.

There are seven tournaments (7's) scheduled for next year (2006) for the local lasses - February in Badulla, April in Anuradhapura, June in Colombo, October too in Colombo, November in Colombo and December at Kelani Valley, while the scorpion 7's inaugurated this year at Pannala by Slimline is scheduled for August.

It was also disclosed that there are 56 schools playing in the Under-20 tournaments (28 in the Division I and 28 in Division II).

Speaking where the referees are concerned, Ekanayake, said that there are over 100 active referees, which is insufficient, but the SLRFU, hopes to rope in more by the way of recruiting ex-players. At the moment, there is one in the IRB Asian Elite Panel, three in the Asian International Panel, eight in 'A' 1, 10 in 'A' 2, 18 in 'B' 1, 30 in 'B' 2 and 45 cadet referees.
