Mobile libraries for children's clubs

Hope for Children, the British charity working in Sri Lanka, launched a mobile library scheme at a simple ceremony held recently at Sri Jinaraja Viharaya in Danvilane, Veyangoda. The scheme was initiated in partnership with the Siddhartha Child Development Foundation.

The charity supported the scheme with a gift of library cupboards and books worth Rs. 50,000. The scheme will operate within eight children's clubs - Pipena Kekulu Children's Club, Samanala Children's Club, Bosath Children's Club, Kadugasgoda Children's Club, Simba Children's Club, Pubudu Children's Club, Navoda Children's Club and Arunalu Children's Club - in Veyangoda, Pasyala and Ruwanwella.

Each club was given a set of books different from one another and every three months, these books together with the other supplies would be exchanged among the clubs, so that each club will get the opportunity of accessing not only the set of books initially given to them, but also other books distributed under the scheme.

Selected children from each club have been trained in elementary library science and they will be responsible for the management and expansion of each club library.

The Siddhartha Child Development Foundation has planned a variety of activities to promote not only children's access to appropriate information and to protect them from harmful material as spelt out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, but also to actively foster friendship and civic consciousness among club members, literary and cultural activities, peace education and leadership.

Hope for Children has pledged its support for these activities.

Junior Observer Quiz : General knowledge comes to the fore

They were two days on which the knowledge of schoolchildren from different parts of the country were tested. All the contestants had sharpened their general knowledge skills and were eagerly waiting until the competition got under way.

The event was the preliminary rounds of the Junior Observer Quiz, organised in connection with the newspaper's first anniversary. The venues were the Lake House premises in Colombo and King's Park Hotel in Kandy.

Six schools took part in the competition held in Colombo, out of which three emerged winners. The first round saw Ananda National School from Chilaw in competition with Hejaaz International School of Mt. Lavinia. The latter won the round after a keenly contested competition.

Then it was the turn of Noor International School, Kalutara and Perakumpura National School of Rajanganaya. The former managed to beat the latter in this round to head on to the semi-finals.

The third round saw Royal College and Ananda College, both from Colombo, battling it out for a position at the semi-finals. After a close contest, with both teams scoring high marks, Royal finally managed to beat Ananda.

The round held in Kandy saw Dharmaraja College, Kandy in competition with Christ Church College, Matale with the former emerging winners. The four winners of these preliminary rounds will head on to the semi-finals, for which the date and venue will be announced later.

As in any competition, there had to be both winners and losers. However, none of the contestants of the Junior Observer Quiz returned home empty-handed as all of them received certificates and gifts.

This is the second time a quiz competition was organised by the Junior Observer.
