EC tightens screws by Ranga Jayasuriya Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has decided to appoint Senior Presiding Officers and Junior Presiding Officers for the polling stations in the North-East from outside the province in a bid to prevent vote rigging, a spokesman for the Elections Commissioner's Department said. The spokesman also said the ballot papers would be checked by the Senior Presiding Officer before issuing and police be authorised to question the voters seeming to be minors. The decision was taken after the Elections Commissioner met the political party representatives last week where the UPFA delegation requested the appointment of senior election officials for the North-East polling station from outside the North-East. The Senior Presiding Officer (SPO) is in charge of the polling station. The spokesman also said Assistant Returning Officers would be appointed for every 8-10 cluster polling stations in the North-East. There are 952,324 registered voters in the Northern Province and 952,936 registered voters in the Eastern Province according to the electoral registry of 2004. Meanwhile, LTTE Jaffna political leader Ilamparithy has told the reporters that the Tigers would not obstruct people from voting. But, he said many Tamils would tend to boycott the election, frustrated by the past track record of Southern politics. |
