Govt. to take ST to villages

by Ananda Kannangara

Science and Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitarana yesterday highly valued the importance of developing the field of Science and Technology in Sri Lanka and said that the Government has already made a budgetary provision to expand this field for the next year.

He made these observations at the National Science and Technology Exhibition held in Colombo to coincide with the National Science Week. The Industrial Technology Institute and the National Science Foundation organised the exhibition.

Speaking on the occasion Prof Vitarana said that it was the sole objective of the Government to take science and technology (ST) to the villages in order to commence various industries and self employment projects.

"If the latest technology is brought to the villages it will immensely help to overcome poverty and also help poor young unemployed persons to access the technology thorough computers that are being established at each centre free of charge," he said.

Commenting on the subject of brain drain, which has become a severe problem in our country, Prof. Vitarana said that this situation has badly affected our Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

"Sri Lankas GDP rate has sharply declined compared to some other developing as well as developed countries. Therefore it is the duty of all concerned to develop Science and Technology sector and the respective governments must also pay a special attention to this area," he said.
