Southern polity unconcerned about Tamils

by Rashomi Silva

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) last week expressed its disappointment over the Southern polity's apparent lack of concern over the interests of the Tamil community in the North-East and said manifestos of the two main Presidential candidates do not address the burning issues of the Tamil community.

Speaking to 'the Sunday Observer' TNA parliamentarian Mavoi Senathiraja said: "This was apparent when none of the main two candidates offered to discuss their manifestos with main representatives of the North-East Tamil community, the LTTE or the TNA."

"Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse entered into an agreement with the JVP and the JHU, and the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe signed agreements with the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and main upcountry Tamil political parties, but neither of them even considered talking to us, the elected representatives of the North-East Tamil community or with the LTTE," Senathiraja said adding that shows the Sinhalese political parties lack of interest in the Tamil Nation.

"There is no consensus between the Tamil Nation and the Sinhala Nation nor is there any consensus between our political entities," he said. He said upto now no political party has come to North-East, particularly to the North for campaigning. "The UNP and SLMC are doing some campaigning in the Muslim majority East, but they too have not approached the Tamil majority areas".

He said the party and the LTTE would discuss if they were to support any candidate in the election, but said they would not make any objections if the people decide to support any political party. "But to us it appears that the people are not interested in the elections. This again shows there is no consensus between the two nations," he said.
