Sri Lanka must win by over six points to advance

Kazakhastan are scheduled to arrive in Colombo on Wednesday for their "return" Rugby World Cup (RWC) Asian qualifier with Sri Lanka to be worked off at the CR and FC grounds, Longdan Place on Saturday November 12 at 3.30 p.m.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), Dilaroy Fernando, told the Sunday Observer that the time of the game was advanced by one hour as the Met Department has forecast heavy rain in the evening of the match and that it will also gets dark very soon.

Fernando also disclosed that Sirasa TV will be telecasting the game live and price of tickets have been priced at Rs. 250 (pavilion), Rs. 100 (uncovered terraces) and Rs. 50 (standing), while schoolboys from the Western Province will be issued tickets at concessionary rates,while schoolboy players will be issued complimentary tickets.

He further said that the Sri Lanka pool started training again from October 29 under national coach George Simpkin and his assistant Chandana Abegunawardene at Londen Place and Royal College Sports Complex. Flanker Pavithra Fernando (CR and FC) who was injured in the first-leg game versus Kazakhastan on October 25 is at the Nawaloka Hospital with a spinal injury.

He is to be replaced by Kandy's Sean Wijesinghe. Dushantha Lewke too was injured in Almaty, but has recovered and will play.

Japan's Shinji Aida will be the referee, while the Match Commissioner will be Don Mcbain from Hong Kong. The two touch judges too are from Japan. Sri Lanka lost the first game with Kazakhastan (19-25), but if they win on Saturday by a margin of over six points will either meet China or Arabian Gulf in the next stage.

Earlier, Sri Lanka beat India 54-17 at Mumbai and Thailand 35-14 at Longden Place last year (2004), while this year (2005), beat Thailand 48-38 at Suphunbari and Singapore 34-17 at Longden Place. Fernado also said that the Singer Circuit 7's scheduled to have been played this month have now been postponed for January-February next year (2006) with the first tournament in end January and the second early February.

Sri Lanka will also play in the pre-Asian Games 7's in Qatar in end February (the Asian Games are in September in Qatar), while the Mercantile 7's is scheduled for December 3 and 4. Then there is the Commonwealth Games Rugby 7's in Melbourne, Australia in March next year (2006).

The SLRFU are also preparing to conduct a Rugby Congress at the Colombo Swimming Club on either December 10 or 11.
