Police, Colombo Bulls in fine wins

Police and Colombo Bulls scored fine victories in their group games of the 'A' Division of the Super League Championships conducted by the Colombo District Basketball Association (CDBA) now in progress on the Depot Police courts.

Colombo Bulls beat Air Force by 90 points to 44 after leading 42-23 at half time. Duke Rajapakse (23), Heshan Premachandra (18) and Aruna Wickremage (17) did most of the scoring for Colombo Bulls, while Asanga Perera (913), Ravi Dodangoda (10) and Indika Wijesena (10) were the main scorers for Air Force.

Police first beat Otter AC 63-58 in a close tussle after being led 32-35 at half time. Vajira Kumarasinghe (19), Gazali Razack (17) and Ranga Perera (13) were the pick for the Policemen, while for Otters, Gayan Meedeniya (24), Roshan Gunasekera (19) and Shanaka Perera (12) did most of the scoring.

Then in another game, Police, beat Army also in the 'A' Division by 96 points to 59 after leading 47-33 at half time with Sujeewa Wijeweera (36), Aman Razack (12) and Vajira Kumarasinghe (12) doing most of the scoring, while Dhammika Nishantha (17), Kumara Dias (15) and Dilruk Prasanna (11) were the main scorers for the Soldiers.

Knights edged out University of Colombo by a very slender 56 points to 55 after being led 27-28 at half time with Ranjith Nonis (16), Jithendra Jinasena (15) and Achintha Senanayake (13) being the match winners. This was in the 'B' Division. For the undergraduates, Varuna Gamage (20) and Bhogika Panditharatne (16) did most of the scoring.

In another 'B' Division game, Maroons beat Red Devils 53-41 after the scores were level (24-each) at half time.

Chirath Samarasekera (16), Mithila Abeysekera (15) and Kalhara Menikdiwela (10) were the best, while for Red Devils, Himantha Perera (15), Sumith Perera (14) and Sonal de Silva (6) did most of the scoring. Field Force Youth beat Colombo International School 95-66 after leading 49-25 at half time. Niroshan Sydney (21), Nilanga Wickremaratne (18) and Anuradha Amaratunga (17) did the bulk of the scoring for Field Force Youth, while Rahman Cader (32) was the best for CIS.

In the Women's 'B' Division, Colombo University beat Kelaniya University by 42 points to 41 in another very close tussle with Fathima Rizana Nizar (20), Susie Belling (10) and Sali Subasinghe (10) being the main scorers, while for the Kelaniya undergrads, D. H. T. B. Dewaraja (25) was the best.

Then in another game in the Women's 'B' Division, Josephians beat University of Kelaniya 62-34 after leading 39-19 at half time. Chethani Peiris (24), Solangi Gunawijaya (11) and Prasadi Fonseka (10) were the top scorers, while for the undergrads, Anoma Ratnayake (11) and Suhan Samararatne (11) were the best. (L.G.)
