P.G. Martin goes for two more outlets

P.G. Martin, the well known name in luggage is planning to open two more outlets in Colombo in the near future including an exclusive P.G. Martin Samsonite Travel World Sales outlet and a P.G. Martin Luggage Collection outlet said P.G. Martin Luggage Collection Chairman and Managing Director P.G. Lalith Nimalasiri.

He said that at present they are looking for suitable locations. The company is also planning to open an outlet in Kandy by February next year. At present they own six outlets.

The exclusive Samsonite Travel World Sales outlet was added to our portfolio in December 2003. Earlier we were dealing with mostly Chinese brands but we were the leading importer, he said.

Samsonite set up a plant in India in 1987 to distribute their products to the South East Asian region and therefore they were looking for partnerships. They had studied the markets, the importers and Asuthosh Waidya came to Sri Lanka and had a meeting with us.

By this time we were also looking to get the exclusive distributorship and they were willing to give it to us since we were the largest importer. Nimalasiri said that from early 2000 they used to import a small quantity of Samsonite products from Singapore. "Therefore I would say it was the right time".

Speaking of the success of the exclusive P.G. Martin Samsonite Travel World Sales outlet, he said that in 2004 they had sales worth Rs. 16 million and up to October, 2005 sales increased to Rs. 21 million.

Nimalasiri said that they are planning to increase sales to Rs. 30 million next year.

He said the Group P.G. Martin was established by his father P.G. Martin Nimalasiri in 1948 by selling goods on the pavement. Due to the rapid progress he was able to open the first sales outlet at First Cross Street, Colombo 11 in 1950.

At present the company has six subsidiaries under its group including P.G. Martin Company, P.G. Martin Industries, P.G. Martin Imports and Exports, P.G. Martin WonderWorld, P.G. Martin Luggage Collection and P.G. Martin Entertainment (Pvt) Ltd.

P.G. Martin Industries manufactures leather products such as leather bags to be sold locally and for exports. P.G. Martin Imports and Exports are sole agents for Samsonite, American Tourister, Antler, Carlton, President China, US Polo Products and many more Chinese products.

P.G.Martin Wonder World are the sole agent for American brand Little Tides while P.G. Martin Entertainment (Pvt) Ltd operates kiddies parks in and around the city of Colombo and the Excel World Entertainment.
