ACTA to fulfil needs of construction industry

by Don Asoka Wijewardena

Extensive training on the techniques of the construction industry is absolutely essential if Sri Lanka is to achieve success in the construction industry. The Advanced Construction Training Academy (ACTA) will fulfil that objective, said Housing and Construction Industry, Eastern Province Education and Irrigation Development Minister Ferial Ashraff after laying the foundation stone at a ceremony to construct the ACTA at Palawatte Battaramulla on Wednesday.

Minister Ashraff said that the 2005 Budget had allocated Rs.100 million to construct a training centre for local construction personnel and the management of ACTA would be administered by the private sector.

She said that it was a common sight to perceive the magnitude of the construction industry mushrooming as high-rise buildings and condominium projects were being constructed by the private sector and added that the private sector's involvement to upgrade the construction industry was quite necessary.

National Construction Academy of Sri Lanka Chairman Prof.Luxman Alwis said that the advanced training to work on par with international construction personnel was extremely important as the construction industry would need skilled manpower and sophisticated machinery.

He said that the new budget had allocated financial grants and resources as incentives to upgrade the construction industry as more construction personnel had shown a keen interest to enter the industry. Housing and Construction Industry, Eastern Province Education and Irrigation Development Ministry Secretary Ms. Mallika Karunaratne said that the establishment of the ACTA was a long-felt need and foreign expertise to train local construction personnel would be welcomed, especially from countries where the construction industry had been in full swing.

She also said that Sri Lankan construction personnel would be able to rub shoulder with international construction personnel with the application of advanced construction technology and win international fame for constructing well-designed and durable buildings, houses and industrial complexes.
