IPM draws up ambitious program

The Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) Sri Lanka, the nation's leader in Human Resource Management (HRM) has planned a number of activities for next year including the National HR conference, IPM Awards ceremony and the CEO's breakfast meeting.

Vice President and Chairman Media and Publicity Committee, IPM Priyal Perera said that the National HR conference themed "the New HR", the mega event in the IPM calendar is scheduled for June next year while the Awards Ceremony is scheduled for May. The breakfast meeting will be held in February 2006.

All the events and themes were selected to cater to the present market needs, Perera said. Speaking of the challenges faced by IPM, he said that due to the liberalisation of educational institutes all are trying to attract and influence the market. Perera said that they are able to face the challenge successfully as IPM gives a total HR solution that none can match. Now people come to IPM for HR solutions. Therefore we have an all inclusive package for HR including education, training and consultancy services.

Perera said that an Employee Placement Centre was launched by the IPM for the benefit of the prospective employer who is head hunting for the ideal HR Professional and the student who is looking for suitable employment in the HR field.

The consultancy arm of the IPM consists of professionals who are practising HR persons who head leading establishments in the corporate and the government sector.

He said that to cater to the needs of the present day the IPM executive council changed the syllabus to elevate the career path of a student to a professional standard. Under this scheme a student has to sit for a three stage examination and present a project report. Once he/she completes the course they can discontinue studies or opt to study for an MBA in HR.

The IPM in association with the University of Southern Queensland Australia offers the MBA. It is an internationally reputed university for distance learning, he said.

In addition the IPM also conducts a foundation course in Human Resource Management, Certificate Course in Human Resource Management as well as a Certificate course in Training and Human Resource Development.

At present the student base is increasing and to meet the present demand for HR management we have planned a new building project and are confident of completing the building within an year.
