Devananda's
implicit faith in Mahinda
"Vote for Mahinda" EPDP chief tells Tamils in his letters to them in North East Here are some excerpts; `Sinhala masses are getting ready to vote at the Presidential election. What is the standpoint of Tamils? `What is the position of the Tamil leadership? Tamils should give a thought to this. `We, the EPDP link the Presidential Election with the solution of ethnic problem. There is no alternative view that the political solution to the Tamil people based on the autonomy of our motherland. There can be no room for flexibility on this issue. We could solve our problems, whether we like it or not, by negotiating with the state leaders of this country. There is a compulsion to go for a third party, either our friendly neighbour India or any other country joining hands with it. Firstly, the person whom we like, person who has the cult to solve the ethnic problem, should become the President of this country. He must be a person who understood the problems of the Tamil speaking people and the LTTE. It is a fact such a person, who could enlist the support of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities, should be the President. Therefore, we would like to elect a president whom we like. Under these circumstances, we are compelled to take a flexible stand considering the time and situation. This is a diplomacy that a person who could solve the ethnic problem should become President. However, we would not be flexible in our political objective, federal rule in the centre and autonomy in the region. Therefore, EPDP supports Mahinda Rajapakse, though differences exist. Attractive phrases and colourful promises are not important for us. We need a practical approach to the solution of ethnic crisis. Whoever becomes the President, he will be compelled to solve the burning question as there will be international pressure. Therefore, we support Mahinda Rajapakse with great hopes. We support Mahinda Rajapakse as he had promised that he would make efforts to solve the problem in a short time after assuming power. We support him as he said that he would avoid another war. We support Mahinda Rajapakse because he has come forward to find a practically possible approach to the ethnic problem, keeping out the failed moves in the past, in mind. We support him, as he had accepted that Tamils do have problems, and they should live in equality with all others in the country. We support him as he had understood the three-stage plan to create an autonomy for our motherland. We support him as he had taken a firm position on the economy and livelihood of Tamil speaking people. We support Mahinda Rajapakse, as six-rounds of talks after the MOU failed to reach the target.
