Sri Lanka achieves international acclaim in hairdressing

A success story has unfolded in the local Beauty Arena with the Sri Lanka Association of Hairdressers and Beauticians (SLAHAB) qualifying for International status.

It is sheer hard work over the past years spurred on with determination that has put SLAHAB in the forefront of the local Beauty Industry and the international map. Today, SLAHAB is on par with International partners of the Beauty scene.

Hailed as the 'grandest hair event in Asia', the Hair Asia-Pacific championships attracted the participation of renowned hairstylists, beauty specialists, make-up artists and scientists from key Asian-Pacific countries such as Japan, China, Taiwan, Australia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippine, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

The contest was designed to evaluate the creativity of every stylist within a set time frame and was adjudged by an eminent panel of internationally acclaimed hair and beauty personalities from around the world. Both ladies and gents professional and youth teams competed. Individual competitions allowed team members and non-members to compete for the world's highest honours in the art of hairdressing and make-up.

The winner in each category was awarded a trophy, cash prizes and a certificate.

Sri Lanka was the proud winner of many categories at this event, out of over seventy participants who took part - the largest contingent so far.

Extensively trained under the guidance of the five-member team comprising Ramzie Rahaman, Shereen Fernando of Janet Salons, John of Cutting Station, Cheryl Goonaratne of Head Masters & Kanjana Godigamuwa of Salon Nayana, these contestants underwent a 6-month training period organised by SLAHAB & conducted at Nayana Salons.

Irangani Pinto who was the most outstanding Sri Lankan at this event, winning the most outstanding performer award along with many other awards says, that it was this training which helped enhance her skills and led her into winning these awards.

Another winner, Samanthe Kumar who won the award for the first runner up for the Gents Trend hairstyles has this to say. "I now have the confidence to compete with international hairdressers, thanks to SLAHAB".

Another winner who voiced similar sentiments was Azhar Shuhano who says, "I never had the chance to learn and participate in such international events before.

Thanks to the dedication and fair treatment given by SLAHAB towards all the participants. they really gave us, simple less privileged guys the chance to show our talents at an international contest of this nature."

Among the other winners from Sri Lanka are Aroshika Fernando who won the first place for Bridal Make-Up and second place for Elegant Hairstyles and 19-year-old Sachin Wijenanda who was placed 4th runner up in the Junior category for Gents Trend Cut & Style and Maheesha de Silva, still a schoolgirl, who won the fantasy hair category.

Quoting his thoughts on the event and its achievements Yohan of Cutting Station states, "This is a contest that uplifted the standards of the hairdressing industry in Sri Lanka and is a brilliant idea initiated by SLAHAB."
