Increased violence affects children most - UNICEF

United Nations Children's Fund calls upon all Sri Lankans to respect the rights of children and ensure their safety especially highlighting that children however should not pay a high price for escalating violence in Sri Lanka's North-East.

A press release issued by the UNICEF says even today children are injured and hospitalised due to the shrapnels as a result of ongoing problem at a part of the country.

UNICEF country representative JoAnna Van Gerpen, further says on the release that recent incident which children caught up and injured in violent attacks had disturbed their education and are a proof that their lives and health are at risk. She also added that continuing violence hinders the country's political, social and economic development.

She also highlighted that incidents which bring extra hardship on children made it more difficult for aid organisations to provide support for relief and rehabilitation. "To stop paying the highest price by children in the absence of peace should be stopped", she further added.
