Survey predicts Mahinda victory by Anura Maitipe The victory of the SLFP Presidential Candidate Mahinda Rajapakse in the forthcoming presidential election is imminent. This has been predicted in an all- island survey conducted by the Inter- University Student Federation, Mahaweli,Riverbasin Development and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary of Maithripala Sirisena, told the Sunday Observer. The Minister said that during the previous election Ranil Wickremesinghe promised to make an air port at Wellawaya and offered bracelets for the rural youth along with motor cycles and jeans. He promised to export Sudubanada's agricultural produce to Singapore and urged the farmers not to chew betel and to have chewing gum. The earlier concept of Regaining Sri lanka seems to have changed all of sudden. Now he does not talk of earlier promises. He talks of setting up an Air Port at Trincomalee and providing milk and school uniforms to children. He promises to provide a certain brand of imported milk.It appears he is plotting to destroy the local milk industry by playing into the hands of certain multinational companies, he warned. It was a Ranil Wickremesinghe regime that stipulated elaborate procedure for the issue of free school uniforms to school children. Now he is going round the country saying that he has Rs 500 billion in his pocket gifted by US President George W Bush. No country could offer such a grant on a personal basis. This is a mere political gimmick of the UNP leadership. |
