PM recalls consistent support to Muslim causes by Thava Sajitharan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse last week pledged to rehabilitate the expelled Muslims of the North who are still living in displaced areas, once he is elected the next president of Sri Lanka. Addressing a gathering of Muslim representatives at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium last week the premier reaffirmed that he would neither leave out the Muslim community nor any other sector of society in the peace process. Speaking to an applauding crowd that thronged the stadium, the Prime Minister said the time was ripe for true peace in the country and it could not be obtained without solidarity. He denounced the charges that he was a racist and said that his consistent support of Muslim community itself was testimony of his acceptability to all communities. He pointed out that he promptly protested the war by USA on Iraq that massacred infants and pregnant mothers while the UNP was seemingly supporting the cause. The Prime Minister strongly criticised the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for delivering a speech at the United Nations in support of the war by the USA. Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana in his welcome address said no true Muslim would vote for anyone else other than Mahinda Rajapakse for he has been the one who always stood up for Muslims not only in Sri Lanka but all around the world. He expressed confidence that Mahinda would become the next president 'through the mercy of Almighty Allah'. Several other Muslim leaders including Ministers A.H.M. Fowzie and A.L.M. Athaulla and JVP parliamentarian Anjan Umma were also present at the event. |
