CPSL welcomes LTTE decision

Communist Party Leader D.E.W. Gunasekera at a press briefing of the five-party Left Party Alliance held on November 11 at the CPSL Headquarters in Colombo said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse would solve the ethnic problem on the basis of compromise, consensus and transparency. He said the Prime Minister opposes war, proposes negotiated final settlement and even prepared to have talks with LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Gunasekera said, no party, even the UNP could solve ethnic problem single-handedly. The Prime Minister's view was that the ethnic problem could be solved through negotiations. Even the JHU had changed its position to accept an Indian model of devolution of power. JVP too is not against negotiations.

The CP leader welcomed the LTTE decision to allow North East Tamils to cast their votes freely. The LTTE knew well who Ranil Wickremesinghe was. Ranil said he would go to the United States and sign agreements with the Bush Administration. It would not be a surprise if he draws the US forces to handle the ethnic conflict. LTTE has enough experience with Ranil's administration. Ranil served as a Minister during the 1983 riots. He never condemned the attacks.

He said that many countries in the world have no two-party system. Indian Congress and BJP had to form coalition governments. Forces unite on their class basis. 'Mahinda Rajapakse is a tested leader and always stood with the progressive forces. He is not a communalist, but a leader with excellent qualities.", Gunasekera added.

Democratic Left Front Leader Vasudeva Nannayakkara warned the imperialist intervention at the Presidential polls. He said Ranil Wickremesinghe has joined the Conservative International led by George Bush, what even J.R. Jayawardene had not done. Ranil became a henchman of the imperialist strategy and it is a threat to independence and sovereignty of Asian countries.

Nannayakkara said that 'Mahinda Chintanaya' clearly guides the road against anti-people open economy.

LSSP, DJVP and SLMP leaders also spoke at the briefing. (MPM).
