by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy Sports Corr.

University of Colombo won the overall championship title and also the championship for women while University of Moratuwa walked away with the championship title for men at the Inter-University Swimming Championship organised by the University Sports Association and conducted by the University of Peradeniya and worked off at the swimming pool of the University of Peradeniya.

Only one meet record was lowered when B. E. J. Fernando of the Kelaniya University timed 5.36.42 mts in the 400 metres Freestyle event and had a lead of a minute over the second placed T. G. Kalupahana of Colombo University.

There were a number of outstanding performances, Matt Colley of University of Peradeniya who won three events - 100 metres backstroke, 100 metres freestyle and 50 metres freestyle which he scraped through by a mere 7 seconds from the second placed R. K. M. J. B. Wijeratne of Moratuwa university.

The fine performance by Matt Colley helped University of Peradeniya to finish overall runner-up, though they could only finish runner-up in the championship for women.

Apart from Colley, another swimmer to shine was Kusal Senanayake of University of Sri Jayawardenapura who too won three events namely 50 metres breast stroke, 100 metres breast stroke and 200 metres breast stroke. B. E. J. Fernando of Kelaniya University also did well to win two events.

In the championship for women it was R. R. Jayasundera of University of Colombo who stole the show by winning three events - 50 metres back stroke, 50 metres freestyle and 200 metres freestyle and also played a major role in the relay events which contributed in a big way to her side becoming championships in the events for women.

Also excelling was Nimni Gunatilleke of University of Sri Jayawardenapura by winning the 50 metres breast stroke and 100 metres breast stroke events. S. I. Molligoda of University of Colombo too put up a gutty display to win two events - the 200 metres Individual Medley and 100 metres Butterfly stroke and was also placed second in the 50 metres butterfly stroke.
