Land Rovers first and third in Land Rover challenge Indika Snajaya in a 1972 Range Rover won the Land Rover Challenge, the event organised Frontier Automotive - the local agent for Land Rover with the Land Rover Owners Club and Ricochet Event Management at the Waters Edge Golf Club. Indika was navigated by his wife Ishara. Indika is a veteran competitor at 4x4 driving and has also won the Nuwara Eliya Lake Cross last Aril. Indika's timing was 1 minute 49.65 seconds. In second place was Sean Hameed - the proprietor of Outdoorsman. He is the 'godfather' of off-roading in Sri Lanka and has made a significant contribution to the popularisation and development of this strain of motor sport. Sean's drive in a Toyota Land Cruise, specially prepared by him was flawless and he had a timing of 1 minute 58.82 seconds. Ruchiran Silva was placed third, driving a Land Rover Defender 110. Experienced off roader Prasan Wijeyanayake gave the spectators an interesting display of driving. When he took a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee round the course, navigated by the energetic and somewhat anxious Tharanga, the driving force behind the marketing of Jeep in Sri Lanka. Sanath Jayawardena's drive was adjudged the 'Most Spectacular' drive of the day, when he demonstrated the Land Rovers agility. He slid off course up one of the hills, with his vehicle at more than 45 degree angle, requiring the marshals to strap the top of his vehicle to ensure it didn't topple. Osanda's radical V8 powered Defender 90, styled based on the Land Rover Bowler competition vehicle was adjudged the most radical vehicle of the day. The award for the oldest Land Rover that took part was won by Pasanji de Silva, who recorded a creditable time of 4 min 53.14 seconds, driving a 1973 Land Rover Series III. |
