Police rush to Kotagala

By a Staff Correspondent

A top police team from Colombo has been dispatched to Kotagala police area following information that large amounts of goods such as sewing machines, television sets, bicycles, cookers, etc. dispatched for distribution among the poor have not been properly accounted for and distributed by the Provincial Council, Police sources said.

It was learnt that these goods received or purchased by the Estate Housing, Infrastructure and Community Development Ministry under the "Yatithala Pahasukam " project worth several millions of rupees have been despatched to Kotagala almost two years ago and were stored in two places on the instructions of the Ministry.

Police said they are probing whether the Provincial Council has properly accounted for these goods or whether these items have been handed over to persons favoured by the Minister concerned. They are also probing whether any misappropriation has taken place.

Meanwhile the police team have taken into questioning two persons and sealed the two premises and placed guards till completion of investigations.
