Flood: Relief work afoot in North by Thava Sajitharan As heavy rain continues in some parts of the island, relief efforts are afoot in the flood-affected areas of the North, according to government sources. Displaced victims are being accommodated in public places like schools and temples. Mannar District Government Agent (GA) V. Visuvalingam told the Sunday Observer on Friday (25) that there had been 11,748 displaced persons from 2551 families up to that date. Number of affected people is expected to further increase since the district is experiencing continuous rainfall, he said. Victims of the flood had been provided with cooked meals since October 21 according to him. Noting that relief work was being carried out with the assistance of several other organizations Visuvalingam stated that 0.6 million rupees was granted by the government. Another 1.9 million rupees is needed, he said. Meanwhile, Vavuniya District GA S. Shanmugam said about 5600 families, mostly from 'uncleared areas' such as Nedunkeni, were reported to have been affected by the flood and being provided aids. He said that the government had immediately released 1 million rupees and another one million rupees is needed. An official from Mullaitivu district office who wished to be anonymous said proper figures of affected people were not available. She further said that they had received 1 million rupees from the government for relief work and still needed 9 million rupees. Government Agent Mullaitivu was not available for comment. |
