Rs. 1.6m insurance fraud By Jayampathy Jayasinghe A large insurance fraud was detected following the arrest of an insurance company executive in Colombo who is said to have defrauded the insurance company to the tune of Rs 1.6 million, a spokesman for the Kelaniya Police said. The Kelaniya Police Special Investigation Unit (SIU) that investigated the racket arrested the suspect Executive with several forged documents. Following the arrest, the police raided a printing press at Malabe and recovered a printer and a scanner used for preparing forged accident claims of motorists. ASP Priyantha Jayakody of the Kelaniya Police said the Executive had submitted over 20 false claims to his Insurance Company branches at Kiribathgoda, Malabe, Wattala, Rajagiriya, Moratuwa, and Talangama and had collected Rs 1.3 million fraudulently by saying that he would pay motorist involved in accidents. The racket was exposed during an audit inspection when they discovered the same motorist involved in an accident had been paid twice by the company. However, when it was brought to the notice of the manager who had certified the claims, he denied having authorised any payment or signed any voucher. According to Police under a new motor insurance scheme, clients are paid up front on the spot where they meet with accidents which had led to several rackets. DIG North Western Range, Asoka Wijetillake has directed ASP Priyantha Jayakody and Inspector Ratnayake of the Kelaniya Special Investigation Unit to conduct further investigations in to the racket. |
