Bhupathy will set up own Tennis Academy here next year

By Lal Gunesekera

India's winner of nine Grand Slams, Mahesh Bhupathy, will set up one of his own Tennis Acadamies in Sri Lanka by April next year (2006) and even help to get Sri Lanka as venue for one of the Women's Circuit tournaments worth US Dollars 1.5 million in the following year (2007).

Bhupathy who is on a visit to Sri Lanka at the invitation of the President of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA), Suresh Subramaniam, said that he spent his day on Friday after arriving in the island on Thursday with Sri Lanka's Davis Cup squad and the juniors.

Hosted at the Galadari Hotel with his wife, Bhupathy, said that they will have to devise plans to improve the level in Sri Lanka and create a workable system.

He said: "If you put the right system in place, there is nothing that you cannot do.

Hopefully, Sri Lanka will have a player on the international scene in the near future.

Bhupathy's company, Globe Media Solutions, runs five tennis academies in India which have produced players in the calibre of their Davis Cup No. 1 Bhopanna and new sensation Sania Mirza too.

He said that the Centre in Sri Lanka will make use of our local coaches, but will bring in a lot of expertise from India too.

President of SLTA, Suresh Subramaniam, thanked Bhupathy and his wife for accepting the invitation to come here and explore the possibilities of setting up a tennis academy.

He said it was a great occasion for SLTA. CEO of SLTA, Lionel Almeida, whilst thanking Bhupathy and wife also thanked Galadari Hotel and its General Manager, Sampath Siriwardene, for hosting the Indians on their short tour.

Bhupathy and his wife who celebrated their third wedding anniversary in Sri Lanka on Thursday (November 24), cut a cake for the occasion and were also gifted with a "present" from the SLTA.
