IIT meets increasing demand in IT industry

by L.S.A. Wedaarachchi

The Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), the pioneers in British IT education in Sri Lanka having established a new link with the University of Westminister in London offers a series of degree programs in Information Technology.

Over the last fifteen years IIT has produced over one-thousand-five-hundred graduates in Sri Lanka and neighbouring Asian countries in computer studies at a much more affordable cost than in the UK. The Informatics Institute of Computer studies was set up in 1990.

It was an ambitious venture started by Informatics Ltd. with a vision to produce a new generation of qualified IT professionals increasingly in demand by the industry.

At the beginning Informatics Ltd entered into a collaboration with the Manchester Metropolitan University to conduct BSc Hons in information systems and computing in 1990. This collaboration enabled the Informatics Institute of Computer Studies to conduct the Manchester University courses in Sri Lanka and award the same certificates offered by the Manchester University in the UK to students in Sri Lanka and neighbouring Asian countries. The first cohort graduated in 1994.

In 1995 the Informatics Institute started the International standard Business degree program BSc Hons in Business in collaboration with the Manchester University.

The first cohort of business graduates was awarded degrees in 1999. Due to the high demand for more IT and Business professionals the Informatics Institute of Technology was established as a BOI project in 1999. It is a full fledged campus with all facilities for three-thousand student undergraduate and post graduate levels. Facilities are available for University level training and research students.

Graduates of the Institute have gained remarkable recognition in the Information Technology and business industries for their skills and at present they occupy significant positions in the public and private sector.

Having links with the University of westminister in London IIT offers five undergraduate programs and MSc programs validated by the University of Westminister.

They are BSc. Hons in Computing, Internet Computing, Software Engineering Information systems with Business Management and MSc Advanced software engineering.

The remarkable feature of the study program at IIT is the one year Industrial placement in the third year of the program. IT gives the degree programmers the cutting edge and they go into industry as young apprentices.

When they come back after one year of apprenticeship for the final year they mature into a group of confident students. Learning from the experts in the industry and doing the job at real time work environment give them confidence to equip themselves for the task ahead. Most of the students secured jobs at the centres they followed their apprenticeship training at the end of the degree programs.
