Hemas lauded for building pre-schools

Education is considered as the intellectual development of the mind and it is children who will be the leaders of tomorrow.

The government is grateful to the Hemas Tsunami Foundation for constructing a number of pre-schools for the children between two and five affected by the tsunami, said Minister of Child Development and Women's Empowerment Sumedha Jayasena at the inauguration ceremony of Hemas pre-school in Wadduwa on Tuesday.

Minister Jayasena said that it was a laudable gesture of Hemas Holdings to help improve the education of small children affected by tsunami and added that her ministry had allocated enough money for the welfare of children.

Referring to the future child welfare programs Ms. Jayasena said that a committee had been appointed to recruit qualified teachers for pre-schools and a plan had been formulated to introduce courses of studies to teachers to enhance their knowledge.

She also said that a Diploma examination would be introduced for teachers and added that all teachers who successfully complete the relevant examinations would be presented Diploma certificates. She said that a special syllabus for pre-school education would also be introduced shortly.

Minister Jayasena said that arrangements were being made to provide a midday meal to students in the near future. "Hemas Company is not a charity service, but Hemas Group used its profits for a worthy cause.

The capacity to make a contribution of lasting value is a privilege," the Minister said. She called upon parents and teachers to maintain the school properly.

Hemas Holdings Director Murthza Esufully said that the Hemas Tsunami Foundation had already built 10 pre-schools at a cost of Rs. 5 million each as the company's target was to construct 20 pre-schools before April 2006.

He said that the company took a decision to construct 20 pre-schools and 10 pre-schools would be opened before December 26 and the other ten would be opened before April 2006.

He said that Hemas Holdings had realised that it was the duty of companies such as Hemas to assist the government by constructing pre-schools destroyed by the tsunami as the government could not work alone in this disaster-hit situation.
