Lanka targets one million tourists

Sri Lanka is targeting to increase tourist arrivals to one million and fast track the recovery of the tsunami affected industry, said new Tourism Minister Anura Bandaranaike who assumed duties last Wednesday.

The Minister said that his top priority is to retrieve the European market. An extensive promotion campaign is now under way in the main European countries. The challenge is restoring confidence of the tourists which was shaken after the devastation. The Minister held successful discussions in this regard with leading tourist agents last week.

The ministry is targeting emerging markets in China and India. Arrivals from these countries are also on the increase, he said.

Tourism is the third largest source of income of the country. The industry has enormous potential to develop. The tourism industry is the main source of income in the Maldives, Bandaranaike said. (GW)
