Paruthithurai Heartle College Advanced Level students staged a protest yesterday (Monday) opposing military forces constructing barriers through college premises. Police and Army were deployed to disperse the protesters.

Meanwhile, school students will be conducting demonstrations throughout the peninsula tomorrow against army forces for creating a war atmosphere in the north. (Thinakural (TK) - 06/12)

Few frail unions are being formed deliberately to weaken the strength of the plantation people. Therefore people ought to be vigilant" said Upcountry People Front's Uva Provincial Council member A.Aravindakumar.

Presiding a gathering at the Provincial Council Auditorium he said: There are over hundred unions in up-country. As a result of such unions sprouting like mushrooms workers solidarity is destroyed. These unions have become the obstacles thwarting the important demands of the workers from being obtained. The Government also conspires to weaken the unions. Creating new unions is a part of it. It is learnt that three parliamentarians representing the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) are likely to join the Government this week. Secret discussions were held with the President in this regard, 'Temple Trees' circles said. Two parliamentarians elected from Nuwara-Eliya District and another national list MP are the ones who took part in the discussion, it is learnt.

However, when contacted, Nuwara-Eliya district MPs concerned denied any meeting with the President and intention to cross over. (VK - 07/12)

Muslim areas in Ampara District have been observing hartal fro last Monday following the killing of two youths by unidentified gunmen in Maruthamunai of Kalmunai police division. Shops were shut down. Fear and tension prevails in the area. (SudarOli (SOI) - 07/12)

A meeting was held between Muslim representatives and LTTE members in Trincomalee yesterday in a bid to defuse the escalating violence in Muttur. (SOI - 07/12)

Tussles between school students and army forces intensified as students threw stones at the army yesterday. The army fired in return but no serious incident occurred. Students are carrying out protests demanding the withdrawal of checkpoints near schools.(VK - 08/12)

'Up-country Indian origin people and Tamil speaking business people are subject to intimidations. We are heading toward yet another 1956 era. President Rajapakse should take measures to ensure the safety of all citizens of this country', said senior Deputy Leader of CWC R. Yogarajan addressing a media briefing in Colombo yesterday.
