Punchline by Buffo

Natural equilibrium

Sociologists were worried that Sri Lankan population was ageing fast thanks to developed health services and the success of family planning, which promoted small families. Small is beautiful they said. The entire family could even ride in a three-wheeler, said a business promo ad. By 2030 more than a quarter of our population would be over 60, they lamented.

Now our genial President cum Minister of Finance has found a simple way to offset this unhappy trend and establish a natural equilibrium. That is to shower more benefits on mothers and children - maternity leave, paternity leave, free nutripacks for expectant mothers, free milk powder allowance for children up to five years of age, free midday meals in schools. Expect a baby boom and by 2030 we would have enough youth to offset the pensioners in numbers.

We would only suggest to His Excellency the President to add one more - have black nights (power cuts) through energy conservation measures to preserve both energy and the environment.
