Ridee Rayak at BMICH For the stars and by the stars. The stars of the Sri Lankan silver screen as well as tele-films will sing, dance and mime on stage to entertain their fans during the festive season. Ridee Rayak, a live performance by Sri Lankan stars will be held on December 23 and 24, at the BMICH.
The show held for the third consecutive year is sepculated to be a great success. "Many fans had to be turned away the last two years we had the show, because the halls were full. That is the reason we decided to extend the show to two days this year," explains veteran actor Ravindra Randeniya. Along with him many stars, from yesteryear as well as those aspiring will be featured on Ridee Rayak. Malini Fonseka, Robin Fernando, Sriyani Amarasena, Sabitha Perera, Sangeetha Weeraratne, Yashodha Vimaladharma, Dilhani Ekanayake, Manjula Kumari and Anarkali Aakarsha will be some of the performers on stage this year. Ridee Rayak 3 is sponsored by Ceylon Biscuits Limited (CBL) and the sponsorship cheque worth Rs. 3.75 million was handed over to the show organisers, Cinestar Foundation, at the Trans Asia Hotel last week. Named 'Manchee Samaga Ridee Rayak 3,' the proceeds of the show will support the welfare of those involved in the film industry. (VF) Festival for the young by LCYTO A festival, a celebration... for the young be they seven or seventy years. A festival which children, along with their grandmothers and grandfathers, mothers and fathers enjoy will reveal on stage, at the Elphinstone Theatre, at 3.30 and 7.00 p.m. on December 22 and 23. It is the festival of theatre for the young audiences. This year, the festival is sponsored by HNB Assurance.
The sponsorship cheque was handed over to Director, Lanka Children's and Youth Theatre Organisation (LCYTO) Dr. Chandana Aluthge by Chief Executive Officer of HNB Assurance Manjula De Silva last week. Theatre helps build a child's knowledge not only on the subject matter, but takes him or her to the wider society, strengthening relationships, inculcating values and imbuing identity and self-worth in a child, said veteran playwright, director and founder of LCYTO, Somalatha Subasinghe. Children's Theatre, is a medium that needs to be used more and more in countries such as Sri Lanka to complement formal education. However, the high cost of production makes it impossible to do so. The ethics of children's theatre requires, low pricing of tickets, but it is an impossible task without government assistance or sponsorship, she opined. This year's festival will present three well-known productions of LCYTO namely Toppi Velenda (The Hat Seller) and Punchi Apata Den Therei (We know it now) by Somalatha Subasinghe, and Walas Pawla (Goldilocks and the three bears) a recent production of LCYTO by Dr. Aluthge. Toppi Velenda, one of the oldest productions of LCYTO has won
international acclaim being performed in English and German languages. It
had been staged at the Asian Theatre Festival in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1997,
New Delhi, Thrivandrum and Chennai, India in 2000, Sydney, Canberra and
Melbourne, Australia in 2000 and at the Seoul International Theatre Festival
for Young Audiences in Seoul, South Korea in 2002.
