SLRC gears to promote ethnic harmony by M. P. Muttiah Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation's Director General Sisira Kothalawala told The Sunday Observer that new programs would be telecast over the Rupavahini to cultivate peace and ethnic harmony in the country. Crews would be sent to Trincomalee and Batticaloa to produce programs that will reflect the cultural lifestyles of people living in those areas. Kothalawala said more programs would be introduced in keeping with the vision of Mahinda Chinthanaya. Local culture would be given pride of place. Already several changes had been made in the News and Current Affairs Division. No partiality will be shown to any political party and the SLRC would function as a responsible media. Talks are under way with India's BSNL channel, to telecast SLRC's local programs to Northern Sri Lanka, thus the people in Jaffna could view these programs through Channel One and Eye Channel, he continued. He said apart from entertainment programs, Rupavahini has a bounden duty to educate the masses. Media and Information Minister Anura Priyadharsana Yapa is keen on a new and decent media culture and had promised to upgrade all state media institutions. Now SLRC is slowly recovering from its stagnant position. "We failed to give prominence to our own cultural values in the past. Now the time has come. This is an era of globalisation, but we cannot ignore our cultural values. I would meet teledrama producers in the near future and arrange to produce teledramas that speak about positive minds and successful stories. I know very well about Rupavahini's shortcomings and its strength. So changes will be made in a proper manner," he said. Kothalawala said that Sri Lankans were united at the time of the tsunami disaster. That was a positive aspect in uniting Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims. Experts predicted that it would take six years to complete the damaged rail track in the South, but was repaired within a short time. This is a success story. Peace and ethnic harmony would be the main motto
of the future Rupavahini programs, he promised. |
