Killer hooch: death toll rises by Jayampathy Jayasinghe Four police teams have been detailed to arrest several illicit hooch dealers in Bandaranikepura in Kakanadura Matara following the deaths of several persons who consumed a poisonous brew on December 6. police said. Meanwhile the death toll had risen to ten while fifty six persons have been admitted to the Matara General Hospital. Of this number 13 patients were transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital as their condition was bad. Three patients who were in a critical condition were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Matara hospital. According to reports people who consumed the deadly brew developed symptoms on December 7 where two persons had died while six were admitted to Matara hospital. OIC Crimes Matara Police, Sub- Inspector, PSC Sanjeewa said they had arrested the suspect who manufactured the illicit poisonous liquor and the woman who sold the stuff to people. Several other illicit dealers who sold the brew would also be arrested, he said. Meanwhile the JMO's at Matara and Galle are expected to send the stomach contents and the poisonous illicit liquor to the Government Analyst for a report. ASP Matara, A.
