Ranil to stay

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

The United National Party (UNP) seniors have given up the challenge to replace leader Ranil Wickremesinghe with a new face but are now trying to democratise the party reducing the powers of the leader.

A party senior told the Sunday Observer that all powers are now centred around the leader and his close associates.

"That was one of the reason for the defeat at the last Presidential election as the leader took many vital decisions with his own crowd without consulting others. We want to remove such people who are responsible for the defeat and replace them with capable people who will lead the party to victory, he said".

"The UNP will continue to face defeats in future elections if the leader is allowed to take decisions with the same crowd", he said. Party seniors Gamini Lokuge, P.Dayaratne, Dharmadasa Banda and a few others have met at Rukman Senanayake's house and have discussed proposals to initiate reforms within the party.
