Norway seeks detailed discussions

by Ranga Jayasuriya

Norwegian peace facilitators have told the government and the LTTE that they need detailed discussions with the two parties before they resume peace facilitation.

"We have told both parties that it is good if we can sit down and have detailed discussions at the political levels of the two parties on how we can proceed with the peace process," A Norwegian Embassy spokesman told the Sunday Observer.

Spokesman, Tom Knappskog said the Norwegians have suggested to hold "clear and detailed discussions" with the two parties on the role of the Norwegian peace facilitation. He said Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brattaskar has conveyed the Norwegian position to the LTTE political chief S.P.Thamilselvan.

LTTE peace secretariat website reported that Ambassador Brattskar told Thamilselvan that a visit by a high level Norwegian political delegation would be important to discuss with both parties on the role and mandate of Oslo as peace facilitators and the role of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission.

Ambassador Brattaskar last week visited Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, the visit came a day after the President Mahinda Rajapakse invited Norwegians to continue with the peace facilitation.

The Norwegian Embassy spokesman said, "the Ambassador impressed Thamilselvan to take every possible action to calm down the situation in the Jaffna and the East". He also met Security Forces commanders, truce monitors and the Government Agent in Jaffna and the spokesman said the Norwegians were concerned about the deteriorating situation in the Jaffna.

The Ambassador also visited Norwegian funded tsunami reconstruction projects in Mullaitivu. Meanwhile, Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg visited New Delhi last week for talks with his indian counterpart on a gamut of bilateral issues.

Knappskog told Prime Minister Stoltenberg's visit was a bilateral visit and the Sri Lankan peace process was not a main issue to be taken up at the discussions.
