Slimline sets up Rs. 700m design facility

Slimline (Pvt) Ltd, Pannala, the winner of all national productivity and quality awards and sports awards which caters to all the top retailers in the world has set up a design facility investing Rs. 700 million.

Gomes has introduced a new corporate culture of competitiveness into the organisations he leads by introducing competitive sports. Slimline became the first mercantile company to win the National Boxing championship twice while the company's women's cricket team won the national championship for five consecutive years. They also became the country's National women's Rugby champions in 2003.

Slimline (Pvt) Ltd was incorporated in December 1993 as a joint venture between Courtaulds Plc (now Sara Lee Courtaulds UK) MAST Industries USA and MAS Holdings (Sri Lanka).

A premier apparel manufacturer in Sri Lanka today Slimline achieved a modest turnover of US$ 4.3 million with a staff of 700 employees in 1994. At present they have achieved tremendous growth with 6,000 staff and a turnover exceeding US$82 million last year.

Slimline's key customers include internationally acclaimed brand names such as Victoria's Secret, Lane Bryant, Lerner, Marks and Spencer, Bhs, Debenhams and Next. Whilst specialising in the manufacture of intimate apparel (commonly known as lingerie). The company also produces leisurewear and sportswear. The primary markets of the company are the US and UK.

The organisation has been awarded several local and international accolades including the Sara Lee Corporations safety award for achieving 22 million hours without any accidents(2004),quality award for outstanding performance and superior quality (1999) the national productivity award (1997,) NCE Export Awards (2003) John H. Bryan community Service Award (2004) and National Business Excellence Award (2004).
