Year One admissions by Jan 19 by Ranga Jayasuriya National School Admission Director Priyantha Srilal Nonis said that all arrangements had been made for year one admissions on January 19. "We are confident that the selection process can be successfully completed and that every child would get a place in a school," he said. Education Ministry has asked school Principals to recheck the lists of students short-listed for the year one admission after irregularities have been found in the lists which have been prepared by a committee appointed by the Ministry. National School Admission Director Nonis said lists of selected students and appeals for year one admission had been sent to the schools and principals had been instructed to summon parents for an interview on the eligibility of their children and recommend names for the year one admission in their schools. Education Ministry took over the selection of year one admission which had for decades been done by the school principals, after allegations of favouritism and corruption surfaced over year one admissions to a few leading schools. The Ministry appointed a committee to select the year one admissions. But the National School Admission Director said the Ministry had now identified certain irregularities in the lists prepared by the committee. "These are basically due to practical difficulties," he said He said the Education Ministry had therefore decided to send lists back to the Principals to do a re-check and to recommend the students for admission to their schools. The lists will then be finalised by the Education Ministry. School principals have been instructed to appoint five member interview panels comprising principal, primary school principal or a senior teacher, principal of a neighbouring school, a School Development Committee member and an old boy/girl. The interview panel will go through the temporary lists as well as the appeals for the year one admission. A meeting was scheduled for yesterday between the Ministry Officials and National school principals to discuss year one admissions. He said the Ministry had decided to reassign school principals to select students for the year one admission. "This is a task they have been doing for decades till the Ministry took it over this year. Now we have found that there are practical difficulties for the Ministry to continue with this task." "In the future, Principals will select the students and the Ministry will formulate guidelines on school admission," he said. |
