Govt ensures public security

The government will take measures to ensure public security based on intelligence reports and will not tolerate any acts of violence against peace loving citizens said the Ministry of Defence Advisor H. M. G. B. Kotakadeniya speaking to the Sunday Observer.

He said it was the duty of the government to afford protection to every citizen from those engaged in committing acts of terrorism.

The police will be instructed to keep a close watch on suspicious characters residing in Colombo and its suburbs. Many of them had arrived especially after the ceasefire agreement was signed and we have reason to believe that terrorist elements would have infiltrated the city and its suburbs judging from past incidents.

There was no reason for us to be complacent about it but to be vigilant. Asked whether the earlier campaign he launched whilst in the police to rid terrorist elements from city lodgings and boarding houses was a success, he said if not for the political interference by the then government, Colombo city would have been a safe place.
