No chance for fertiliser shortage by Deepal Warnakulasuriya Agriculture, Environment, Irrigation and Mahaweli Development Minister Maithreepala Sirisena pledged that the Government promise to provide fertiliser at Rs. 350 will be kept for a long time and no loopholes will be there to create a fertiliser shortage. The Ministry has already appointed district committees to look into the problems relating to fertiliser subsidy in district level. These committees are headed by the relevant Government Agent and Agrarian Services Development Assistant Commissioner, Co-operative Assistant Commissioner and Co-operative Assistant Director would be the other members. Minister Sirisena also said the fertiliser subsidy would be extended to fruits and other cultivations soon. "All the relevant offices, officers and institutes had already been advocated on the program and now the Government seek only their service for the farmers", the Minister added. "Agrarian services provided only 15 per cent of the national requirement of fertiliser, but now the demand has gone up to over 70 per cent, he further added. At a meeting headed by the Minister and attended by Agriculture Development Minister Chamal Rajapakse, Agrarian Services and Farmer Community Development Minister S. M. Chandrasena, Agriculture Development Ministry Secretary Tissa Warnasuriya and several others had decided how the fertiliser brands should be allocated per one acre. |
