Lankan Captain of hijacked ship returns

Mr. Eckman de Silva, the Sri Lankan Captain of MV Torgelow, which was hijacked in Somali waters on 19th October 2005, has been released and returned home.

Following his release in EL-maan Port in Kenya two weeks ago, the Sri Lanka High Commission in Nairobi made arrangements for his safe return to Sri Lanka.

Mr. de Silva arrived in Colombo on Saturday morning (17th December) by flight QR 300 and was received at the airport by members of his family and officials of the Foreign Ministry. The MV Torgelow was carrying commercial cargo when it was hijacked in October.

On the advice of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Ports and Shipping has already cautioned Sri Lankan seafarers to be cognisant of risks involved before seeking employment with shippers plying off the Somali coast or operating from Somali Ports, since hijacking of commercial vessels in this region has become frequent, says a Foreign Ministry media release.
