Old woman dies in train-van collision by Jayampathy Jayasinghe A 76-old-woman passenger was killed and four others injured when the Colombo bound express train rammed into a private van at a level crossing at Kuruppu junction, on Somawathiya Road, Polonnaruwa yesterday. The deceased has been identified as Vini Nona of Polonnaruwa. The injured passengers were admitted to the Polonnaruwa hospital. According to OIC (Traffic) Polonnaruwa, SI Jayalath, the collision took place around 4.30 a.m. while the gatekeeper of the Railway Department was found missing from his post. The van driver having picked up a passenger on Somawathiya Road had driven it across the crossing without noticing the on-coming train, which ploughed into the van, dragging it for more than 150 metres. It was learnt later that a child with a deformed leg was also in the train for treatment by his guardians, when the mishap occurred. The Police have taken the van driver into custody and the gatekeeper for questioning. The train was running three hours late when it arrived at the railway crossing, police said. |
