Russian delegation here to promote bilateral trade

by Gamini Warushamana

A Russian business delegation is now in Sri Lanka to promote bilateral trade and investment between the two countries. The delegation includes Russian companies engaged in transportation equipment and vehicles manufacturing, telecommunication technology, solid waste recycling, water treatment and agriculture.

The head of the delegation Sergai Goverikove said that the successful development in Russia and Sri Lanka has created favourable climate for trade and economic relations between the two countries.

Goverikove, a graduate of the Peradeniya University, had been a diplomat in the Soviet High Commission in Colombo several years ago.

The Soviet Union, once a superpower of the world had the most advanced technology in many sectors and in some cases they were the first inventors. But most of them were limited to the military industry and the technology was not transformed into commercial production in the socialist political and economic system.

However Russian companies are now successfully capturing the world market and competing with leaders.

Kamaz Inc, a heavy duty dump truck manufacturer sells its products in sixty countries. The company supplies trucks for military forces and 20% of the company's truck production is exported.

Construction equipment, tourist buses and large city buses are some of the new products of the company.

MSK "STANKO" supplies a range of waste material disposal technologies suitable for large municipalities, local authorities and companies. WSC "STANKO" is an automated waste storing and waste recycling complex of the company.

Its annual recycling capacity ranger from one thousand to two hundred and fifty thousand tonnes of solid industrial and domestic waste (municipal waste) with extraction of enriched fractions for reprocessing. WSC "STANKO" units may be modified based on typical modules and may be enlarged by stages including equipment with different devices providing cheap, quality and competitive marketable products from secondary raw materials, a company spokesmen said.

In addition MSK "STANKO" supplies equipment for thermal neutralisation of dangerous and medical biological waste, deep biological purification of waste water (having a daily production in the range of 1-500 cubic metres) processing of food and organic waste and producing mineral fertiliser, heat and electric power and bio gas.

He said that it is possible to provide near 100% recycling processing of solid waste based on low expensive and ecologically pure technologies and with a turnover of up to 85-90% waste in the form of marketable products.

The delegation came to Sri Lanka on an invitation of Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC). The details of the companies in the delegation can be obtained from the Russian Embassy in Colombo.

The delegation is also seeking opportunities to invest in rural areas using the new incentives provided by the budget.
