A scintillating evening

by Mahes Perera

Lankika

Anil Bhareti

Fans of the Golden Chimes will no doubt treasure the musical memories at the group's Re-union Concert which was held on Saturday December 10 at the BMICH.

The show titled 'Golden Chimes then and now' was a meaningful dedication to the late Clarence Wijewardena who was remembered with a one minute silence at the start of the concert along with another member of the Golden Chimes, Dilip Peiris.

Thirty five successful years in show biz is a wonderful achievement for Golden Chimes and the young sons of Lankika and Chanaka showed their appreciation with the release of 35 colourful balloons just before the show commenced.

It was a musical evening in which almost all the hits of the group were featured.

Dixon Goonaratne

Rukshan Perera

The opening set saw Lankika in flying form singing the top hit Kimada Nawe backed by the original members Dixon Goonaratne, who flew in from Switzerland, playing lead guitar, Chanaka Perera on bass, Wijith Peiris on drums together with Rukshan Perera - guitar, Jagath Peiris - guitar, Pimal Fernando - Keyboards, Ravindra Fernando and Ajith Wijemanne.

The Golden Chimes big time hits were sung much to the delight at the audience. Hits like Iru Dina, Ma Adere Nangiye, Hiru Ipadenavita, Mage Viyowen Molaketi Puthuni, Guwan Yanaya, Sudu Menike, Bethlenhen Pure and more with Anil Bhareti in his deep rich voice, who was with the Golden Chimes for four years, singing the songs he made popular.

Chanaka Perera

Kudos to Rukshan Perera for introducing the accapela on a Sinhala music concert stage.

His arrangement of some of the songs at the Golden Chimes like Pata Pata Rantharu, Ma Adare Nangiye, Sihineniga, Bethlehem Pure, Sandai Tharui and Irudina in medley form was a rare treat when sung by Chanaka, Rukshan, Jagath, Anil, Dane, Lankika, Pimal and Ajith.

Apart from the Sinhala original songs, the audience was treated to Western Music hits when Rukshan Perera gave a polished performance of Hotel California and an up tempo version of He'll have to go.

Lankika and Chanaka duetted smoothly on the sentimental ballad Somewhere Between while Dane Asmone who joined the Golden Chimes in 1982, sang a rousing Bad Moon Rising much to the delight of the audience in the balcony. Not to be left out from the re-union concert were Terry Miskin whose contribution was Sudu Menike and Rev. Lakpriya de Silva who sang his hits including Adara Akka Wethai while Jagath Peiris entertained the audience with Dalada Perahera.

A CD by the Golden Chimes containing fifteen songs and the accapela medley was launched and the first copy was given to Sunil Malawana the Chief Guest.

The dance sequences by Sensation and El Latino was an added attraction to visual impact and the concert was interestingly emceed by Vijaya Corea. The show was presented by the Ananda College Cricket Wing in collaboration with DR Entertainments.
