Brisk business zoom to all time high during season

by Ananda Kannangara

The peaceful atmosphere now prevailing in the city of Colombo has brought about brisk business to shop owners and payment hawkers during this year's Christmas and the New Year festive season, according to a survey carried out by the media.

Almost all the shops and temporarily erected stalls in Fort, Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya, Town Hall, Borella, Rajagiriya and Maradana were being kept open till late in the night, right from the beginning of this month and will continue during the next few days, to enable last minute shopping.

Sarath Perera, a shop owner on Malwatte Street, Pettah said that the peaceful environment in the city helped them to keep open their shops till 11.00 p.m.

R. Velayudan, a textile dealer on Main Street said that bulk orders for ready-made garments and clothing materials came as far as from Jaffna, this time.

"This indicates the benefits of the present peace process, I hope and pray the new Government will continue with the peace process," he said.

Nimal Ratnasena, another shop owner in Kollupitiya thanked the Police personnel for providing security to both traders and the customers.

Meanwhile it is reported that three prominent textile shops in Town Hall and Kollupitiya have exceeded their daily turnover to Rs. One Million each day.

Businessmen in Nugegoda, Maharagama, Wattala, Mt. Lavinia and Dehiwala were also happy with their daily turnover, in comparison with corresponding periods in the past.

They were of the view that the peaceful atmosphere has immensely helped their business.

When contacted, managers of several super markets and food parlours in the city and the suburbs, said that the customer patronage during the past two weeks was extremely good this time.

Meanwhile our outstation correspondents in Negombo, Galle, Matara, Kandy, Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya reported very good business.
