Indian doctors to man tsunami-affected hospitals In an effort to improve the country's health facilities, Indian High Commissioner for Sri Lanka Nirupama Rao on Friday agreed to Sri Lankan request for Indian doctors to be deployed at tsunami-affected rural hospitals in the North and Eastern Provinces. Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva made this request to the High Commissioner at a function held in Colombo on Friday. The function was organised by the Health Ministry to hand over a consignment of medicine and medical equipment, worth around Rs. 300m donated by the Indian Government. The drugs and the equipment will be utilised at the tsunami affected government hospitals in Jaffna, Hambantota and Point Pedro as per the request of the Indian High Commissioner. However, Ms. Rao requested the Health Minister to submit the exact requirement of doctors. She assured the Health Minister that the request will be granted as quickly as possible. Speaking to the Sunday Observer, Minister de Silva said that the Department is also expected to launch a nurses exchange program between two countries and a scholarship program to enable Sri Lankan nurses to receive higher training at Indian hospitals.
