Dilshan steers Bloomfield to victory

by Ranjan Anandappa

Tillekeratne Dilshan fresh from his arrival from the recent cricket tour of India continued his fine batting form when he struck a match winning unbeaten 107 to steer Bloomfield to a 4 wicket win over NCC in their Premier League limited over final at the SSC grounds yesterday.

This saw Bloomfield retaining the title for the third year in succession.

Dilshan performed the sheet anchor role when he held the batting together with useful contributions coming from the bats of Shanuka Dissanayake ( 46), Thilina Kandamby ( 26). The fourth wicket stand between Dilshan and Dissanayake realised 108 runs and Dilshan also added a further 51 runs for the 5th wicket with Thilina Kandamby. Dilshan's century was studded with ten fours, facing 132 deliveries.

Earlier NCC batting first were restricted to 221 in 49.5 overs. Medium pacer Umesh Wijesiriwardena took 4 for 25. NCC skipper Russel Arnold (36), Sahan Wijeratne ( 43 ), Ravindra Pushpakumara (47) were the main run getters.

Bloomfield were given a rude shock in their batting turn when they were reduced to 16 for 3 at one stage with Sanath Jayasuriya (5) , Ian Daniel (0) both falling to medium paceman Akalanka Ganegama while Saman Jayantha was run out.

But Dilshan walking in at this stage prevented further embarassement for Bloomfield with his well controlled innings with support coming from Dissanayake and Kandamby.

NCC made a partial fight back making Bloomfield get 12 runs off 12 balls. Chinthaka Jayasinghe who came at the fall of the sixth wicket hit 13 runs off three balls which included massive sixes off Arnold and Pushpakumara to swing the match Bloomfield's way .

NCC 221 in 49.5 overs. (Russel Arnold 36, Ravindra Pushpakumara 47, Sahan Wijeratne 43, Upul Tharanga 33, Kumar Sangakkara 25, Umesh Wijesiriwardena 4 for 25)

Bloomfield 225 for 6 in 49.1 overs. (Shanuka Dissanayake 46, T. M. Dilshan 107 n.o, Thilina Kandamby 26, Gihan de Silva 19, Chinthaka Jayasinghe 13 n.o, Akalanka Ganegama 2 for 27).
