Five member team for All - England Badminton C'ships

The Karunaratne brothers of the shuttle game together with two members of the fairer sex will represent Sri Lanka at the All-England Badminton Championships to be staged in Birmingham, England from January 17 to 22.

The reigning men's national champion, Niluka Karunaratne, is the eldest of the trio. He is a world ranked player in the International Badminton Federation (IBF), while the two younger brothers, Diluka and Dinuka, are students at Royal College.

The two women shuttlers are the experienced Chandrika de Silva, who regained her national singles title this year, while the other is young Thilini Jayasinghe, a former national champion.

Niluka Karunaratne is also scheduled to play in the Swiss Open from January 3 to 8 and the German Open too from January 9 to 14 before he joins the others for the All-England Championship.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, will be represented by five players for the preliminary rounds of the Tomas Cup to be staged in Jaipur, India from February 13 to 19 and according to sources of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA), the 17-member pool that was picked for the now postponed South Asian Games in Sri Lanka, will be in training and the final team will be selected from them.

Sri Lanka are also scheduled to field players for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia in March.

Also, Sri Lanka, who were runners-up to India in the first-round of the Asian Under-16 Boys Team Championship in Nepal, are now scheduled to leave for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Tuesday (December 27) to play in the final-rounds scheduled for December 28 to 30.

The six-member team includes Nuwan Dananjaya Hettiaratchi, Menaka Wijeratne, Nayanakantha Wijesekera, Lakshitha Jayamini, Dilshan Kariyawasam and Harsha Perera with K. G. Tillekeratne as manager and Palitha de silva as coach.
