Indoor rugby on January 28

by Srian Obeyesekere

Indoor rugby under lights will make its debut in Sri Lanka on January 28, 2006 at the Austasia indoor complex.

Ruggerites from the private sector, clubs and old boys of leading rugby playing schools will compete in this indoor rugby carnival where trophies will be awarded to the championship, plate and bowl winners.

A team will consist of five players with two reserves and there will be no tackling, no line-outs, no kicking during the game that takes 15-minutes.

It is the brain child of Dhakshitha Anthony, Managing director of Austasia and Wimal Epaarachchi, the manager, who teamed up with some former players like Hisham Abdeen, Sheham Siddik and Ashan Ratwatte and a livewire in charge of Isipathana rugby Ivor Keerthipala, together with Austasia Council President Sarath Kulasekara and Udaya Yatawala.
