Blast shakes VIP airfield in Kashmir SRINAGAR, India, Dec 24 (AFP) - A powerful explosion Friday ripped apart a taxicab at a checkpoint of a heavily-guarded Indian Air Force airfield outside Srinagar that is commonly used by political leaders, police said. The blast, which caused no casualties, came on the day Indian troops shot dead two separatists in a clash near the ceasefire Line of Control that divides Indian and Pakistani Kashmir. Police believed the explosives were hidden in two boxes of apples that the taxi driver had been asked to deliver to an official at the airfield. The taxi had crossed two checkpoints and its driver had left the vehicle to register at a final checkpoint when the explosion occurred. The driver, held for questioning, said a man had hired him in the city center and had accompanied him up to the first checkpoint, said Kashmirs Inspector General of Police K. Rajendra Kumar. |
